SAU Tech in East Camden has secured $20 million in federal funding for a new Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence.

The project includes $15 million for the construction of the new facility and $5 million for advanced training and instructional equipment, made possible through federal appropriations championed by U.S. Senator John Boozman, R-Ark.

“This $20 million investment is about more than bricks and mortar,” said SAU Tech Chancellor Dr. Jerry Thomas. “It’s about creating high‑wage, high‑demand careers right here in South Arkansas. Our graduates will be ready to step into jobs paying $50,000 to $75,000, strengthen our economy, and position our region for long‑term success.”

The Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence will span roughly 50,000 square feet and will feature labs, industrial training areas, and flexible classroom space.

Thomas noted the center aligns closely with the needs of key regional employers such as Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, General Dynamics, Raytheon, Armtec Defense and R2S.

The center will allow for industry collaboration, rapid workforce development, and. hands‑on training using industry‑standard equipment and new technology.

“This project reflects the confidence our partners have in SAU Tech and in South Arkansas,” said Thomas. “With this investment, when employers are ready to expand, our workforce will be ready to lead.”

Once operational, the Center of Excellence is expected to train hundreds of skilled workers each year, supporting job creation, retention, and long‑term economic competitiveness across several South Arkansas counties.

“This funding is critical to help establish this innovative program and obtain the proper equipment to train tomorrow’s aerospace and defense manufacturing workforce,” said Boozman. “I was proud to champion both components of this landmark project and am confident it represents a responsible use of taxpayer dollars.”
