Micah Gamble’s speed and Zavier Jones’ mighty arm leads Fordyce’s varsity Redbugs to a 17-4 decisive win over the England Lions on Friday (March 6).
Gamble had an outstanding performance, driving in four runs on four hits. He contributed two RBIs on a single in the first, then added one RBI each with singles in the second and fourth innings.
Jones was dominant on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings, allowing no hits but giving up four runs and walking two.
England took an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring after a Fordyce error. England’s Caleb Hillis got hit by a pitch, another error, with each mistake bringing in a run.
Fordyce tied things up in the bottom of the first, thanks to a Gamble single and an error. They regained the lead in the second when Jones singled down the right field line and Gamble singled up the middle, both driving in runs.
The Redbugs extended their advantage with two more runs in the third, highlighted by Bryant Robinson grounding into a fielder’s choice to make it 7-3.
The offense exploded in the fourth inning, when Fordyce put up 10 runs on eight hits. Caden Barner walked in a run, Mathew Tanner and Jones contributed singles for more runs, TJ Harris drove in two with a single, Gamble and Sam Petty each singled in additional runs, and Barner capped it off with another RBI single.
Mason Guess started on the hill for England, allowing 15 hits and 17 runs (16 earned) while striking out seven and walking four over four innings. Price, Hillis and Peebles each had an RBI for England.
In total, Fordyce had 15 hits. Jones and Gamble each tallied four hits, while Tanner and Chase Humphrey had multiple hits as well.
